Credit Bureau Bureaus Contact Information

There are three major credit bureaus that handle most of the credit reporting throughout the United States. The three majors: Experian, Equifax and Trans Union, handle the bulk of all credit inquiries. These are private for profit corporations that assemble and disseminate credit related information to those authorized by law, or by you (when applying for credit, insurance or employment).

Each bureau has it's own data base, and each may contain different information about you in your credit report. To get an overall assessment of your credit worthiness, you should obtain copies from all three credit bureaus. (see request letter)  It is not uncommon to find inaccurate or outdated information in your file especially if you have a common name like Smith, Jones, Miller etc.

If your file does have inaccurate or outdated information, you have the right to challenge the credit bureaus who must respond within 30 days after receipt of your request. (see dispute letter) The credit bureaus are required by law to verify the accuracy of the item in question with the company that reported it. If they find the information to be in error, the item must be removed. However, if it's proven to be accurate, the item stays.
